Finance by purpose

Funding for cash flow

Cash-flow funding is usually about timing rather than profitability. The work is done, the invoice is out, but the money lands 30, 60 or 90 days after the costs did. Businesses reach for it when suppliers, wages and overheads all fall due before customer payments arrive.

Structures

How cash flow is usually funded

The right structure depends on how quickly the funding pays for itself. These are the options most often used for this purpose.

  • Short-term working capital facilities repaid from the trading cycle
  • Unsecured facilities where speed matters more than size
  • Facilities sized to the gap rather than the maximum available

Assessment

What affects the amount available

  • Consistency of monthly turnover in your bank statements
  • Length and reliability of your customer payment terms
  • Existing finance commitments and their monthly cost
  • How long you have been trading

Preparation

What to have ready

None of this is mandatory before you start, but having it to hand makes the conversation quicker and the answer more accurate.

  1. The last few months of business bank statements

  2. Your aged debtor report, if you produce one

  3. A clear view of when the money is expected back in

Business finance is a commitment. Repayments must be met from business income, and missed payments can affect your business. Consider affordability before applying.
