Finance by purpose

Funding for new location or expansion

Expansion funding is for a second site, a bigger unit or a new territory. The costs are front-loaded — deposit, fit-out, stock, staff — and the new location rarely pays its way from week one.

Structures

How new location or expansion is usually funded

The right structure depends on how quickly the funding pays for itself. These are the options most often used for this purpose.

  • Longer-term growth finance matched to the payback period
  • Secured arrangements where property is involved
  • Staged funding aligned to fit-out milestones

Assessment

What affects the amount available

  • Performance of the existing site or sites
  • Total project cost including a contingency
  • Lease terms and any deposit required
  • How long the new site is expected to take to break even

Preparation

What to have ready

None of this is mandatory before you start, but having it to hand makes the conversation quicker and the answer more accurate.

  1. A costed project breakdown with contingency

  2. Heads of terms or the draft lease

  3. Trading figures for the existing operation

Business finance is a commitment. Repayments must be met from business income, and missed payments can affect your business. Consider affordability before applying.
